Venez dans les Hauts-de-Seine, il y a des Pokémon !

It’s hard to believe that before the 1980s, there was no such thing as a video game.  But, it’s true. From the moment that Donkey Kong landed in the first bar cabinet as an alternative to the pinball machines that snuggled into any open corner, the concept of “gaming” changed.

1. Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong, which made its appearance in the 1980s at local bars, is responsible for starting an industry that would find its way into our lives in a way that even television was unable to do.

Donkey Kong gave birth to Mario, which led to Super Mario Brothers. Even though in the original game Mario had no name, he took on a life of his own when Nintendo brought out the first home machine and included Super Mario Bros in its game stable.

And, hidden within the original Mario was another unnamed character that would morph into what we know today as one of the favorite characters in Pokémon Go.

2. Super Mario Bros. (1985)

In spite of the fact that Mario preceded Super Mario, the game and character didn’t really take off until it entered the homes of millions of people.

This is one game that parents approve of for their children. In fact, research has shown that children develop essential skill sets when playing these types of games.

Interestingly, one of the many characters that grabbed the attention of players was the little unnamed Pokémon who made its first appearance here.

3. Zelda

As the public appetite for video games increased, a cry was heard in the game development world and an original game with a completely different premise emerged for the first time.

Designed exclusively for home gaming systems, Zelda made its appearance in the 1990s.  For the first time, a game introduced the concept of an adventure story with a hero at the end where players  take on the role of the characters within the storyline and a plot that ended with the main player becoming a hero.

The birth of RPGs really burst open when it was revealed that this story was only the first of many episodes to come. Eventually, the Zelda characters became the grandparents of the Final Fantasy crew.

4. Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII gave all new life to home gaming when Sony scored the coup of the century in tearing the franchise away from Nintendo.

One of the main features that made Final Fantasy VII so different from its ancestors was that more than one player could play the same game at the same time.  In 1997, this was a major fete that eventually led to the next generation of RPGs as MMOs!

5. Pokémon Go

The next giant step in gaming has just made its appearance on our phones.

The first of what is referred to as an Augmented Reality game, Pokémon Go takes a character and puts it in the real world.

At first look, it would seem to be a fairly simple game – chase the characters around the city, find them in your own bathroom, under your bed, in the backseat of your car or in the neighbor’s yard.  But, there comes a point when upgrading and advancing requires a helping hand.  Luckily, there are Pokémon Go Beginners Guide out that is easy to follow and makes total sense of the larger gaming play.

Looking Forward

While no one is sure of where gaming will go from here, there is a probability that Augmented Reality games will become MMO competitive games. Who knows, maybe someone will develop a game that requires physical activity for every player to help us get fit.
