On September 24 (Saturday), Mati City in Davao Oriental was hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to the institute, it was fortunate that the earthquake left no damage in the city. In addition, the Pacific Tsunami warning Center released a statement that the center of the earthquake is far from the seashores so there is no tsunami threat from the strong shake. Aftershocks brought by the earthquake, however, were felt.
Some netizens saw this incident as a way to drag President Rodrigo Duterte down. Aside from blaming the President for the calamity, some of these netizens were convinced that Pres. Duterte started to bring misfortunes in his hometown when he assumed Presidency. Some of them even called it “karma” because of the Davao bombing. They also emphasized the fact that Davao City was considered as the “safest city” but ironically received these kind of incidents.
In addition, haters of Duterte are pointing out his alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings which according to them caused Davao to suffer from these misfortunes.
Meanwhile, some of them seemed to want Duterte to fail in his mission and wished that more tragic things will happen in Davao to prove that Pres. Duterte brings unfortunate events to his hometown.
