[Trending Now] Hidilyn Diaz Won The Silver Medal In Rio Olympics, It Is The First Olympic Medal For The Philippines After 20 Years!

Filipinos woke up to a wonderful surprise as Hidilyn Diaz bagged the silver medal for the 53-kg division of weightlifting in Rio Olympics this morning (Manila time).

Diaz ends the 20-year medal drought that had plagued the country since Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco finished second in Atlanta in 1996, but this is just one of the reasons why her win is historic.

Diaz is the first Filipina to win a gold medal. She is also the first Olympic medalist from Mindanao. 

In a video posted on her facebook page, Diaz credited God for her win. 

“Thank you, Lord,” she said. “Kakaiba ka, Lord God. Kakaiba ka.” 

The three-time Olympian scored a total of 200, just one point above the bronze medalist from South Korea Yoon Jin-hee.
