Every Filipino knows how cruel and villainous Spanish colonizers are. For more than three centuries under the monarchy of Spain, we suffered under their command. It is no wonder that their influence is already deeply engraved on our culture.

History books tried their best to describe the struggles and pain of the Filipino people under the abusive control of the Spanish leaders. The same country which brought Christianity in the land is the same country which took the lives of the people opposing their orders. Although the Philippines and Spain have good foreign relationship at the present, the past will never be erased from the memories of the land.

Realizing the severity of the damage brought by the 330-year Spanish rule of the Philippines, a Spaniard came to the country to humbly ask for the people’s forgiveness regarding the abusive treatment of his ancestors.

Johnny Barnreuther amazed many netizens with his Facebook post where he shared his experience while staying in the Philippines. He stayed from April 1 to April 9 and on his last day, he carried out his sole mission.  He went to Kawit, Cavite where the Philippine independence was first declared to apologize to the Filipino people. He admitted that his country ‘stole [from], abused and murdered’ the Filipino peoples. He gathered Cavite’s region leaders and handed them the Philippine flag while on his knees and with his head bowed. He hoped that this symbolic gesture would bring healing between the two nations.
