Schools in the Philippines find it difficult to prevent students from skipping classes. Because of the high population of educational institutions, it’s difficult to keep track on who among the student population decided to skip class and go elsewhere. The worst part is, these students who are skipping classes are not doing anything productive but are instead wasting their time outside school premises.

Among the worst vices that students have is playing billiards. Billiards establishments are in fact abundant outside school premises. This is the main reason why students are encouraged to skip school and play outside with their classmates.

As a solution, the Department of Education (DepEd) plans on bringing this popular game inside the school.

Ever since the game billiards was declared as an official sport in the Palarong Pambansa at San Jose de Buenavista in Antique, students who have dropped out from school have allegedly come back to study.

Jofran Nyl Tupas, tournament director of billiards in Negros Occidental, DepEd is encouraging school divisions to buy a billiards table for students. Surprisingly, teachers gave a positive reaction to this idea.

“We are putting billiards inside the school para ‘yung mga manlalaro natin hindi na lalabas. Para ‘yung pagte-training natin hindi na lalabas,” said Tupas.

“’Yung programa ng DepEd na sinali ‘yung billiard sa Palarong Pambansa, marami ang bumalik na drop-outs, maraming bumalik na mahilig mag-billiard na bata natin,” he added.

Ryan Dinero, SOCCSKSARGEN coach mentioned that billiards is not a bad game. In fact, he was also proud with the fact that students were coming back to school.

“Before nakikita nila ang bilyaran as a disturbance sa students but now they see it in a positive way na kapag nilagay nila ang billiard sa school, ‘yung ‘di nag-aaral may way na para pumasok siya sa paaralan,” said Dinero.
