Facebook user Princess May Sienes wrote a status last Wednesday, March 1, that shocked the people of Lanao del Norte and his medical associates. According to her, “Superman Doctor is dead.”

She said, “He was a big [loss] for us, a big [loss]! He saved a lot of people, he exerted a lot of effort to improve the system of health care in our municipality.”

She was referring to Dr. Dreyfuss “Toto” Perlas, who was gunned down as he was riding a motorcycle in Barangay Maranding Annex in Kapatagan. The doctor was on the way to Lala town around 7:30 in the evening when the event happened.

Perlas was reportedly the most famous doctor in town and had lots of people who respected and admired him. He sustained a gunshot which pierced his heart after being shot on the left side of his back.

Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that authorities were still looking for the suspect. However, they think that Perlas was followed while he was riding the motorcycle. Witnesses of the area thought that the doctor only suffered a heart attack. Apparently, he was killed.

The president of Batch 30 of the Doctors to the Barrios (DTTB) program, Dr. Anjuli May Jaen, claimed that Perlas received threats from a series of unknown individuals. She did not elaborate on this issue.

The doctor was assigned to Sapad from 2012 to 2014 and always traveled alone in remote villages to conduct medical checkups. However, after his period, he had decided to stay in town to help because Sapad had no municipal health officer for 12 years.

His classmates at UP Visayas High School released a statement that said: “He served the community, the people, with both honor and pride. On March 1, 2017, we lost a humble doctor, an admirable public servant, an unsung hero, a beloved friend. Thank you, Drey. Your courage and your compassion will never be forgotten.”
