A Tunisian TV host was suspended after he asked a rape victim to marry her abuser, claiming that she was to blame for the incident.

Ala Chebbi who is the host of Andi Mankolek or "I've Got Something To Tell You" received criticism after a girl named Hajar went to his show narrating how she was sexually abused by three different members of her family. She added that she is currently pregnant because of the rape incident.
Hajar narrated that due to poverty, she was forced to drop out of school as early as 14 years old. Her father is not always available to look after them because of his work. She also shared that she is sharing a poor relationship with her father and her stepmother.

Hajar was with her brother, Allala at the show. Allala said that his sister was kicked out from their house by their father who is ashamed of Hajar's pregnancy out of marriage.

Because of Tunisia's conservative practice of traditions, pregnancy before marriage is still considered as a disgraceful act regardless of the cause.

When Hajar's father appeared on the show, Chebbi said that "whoever did it should marry her to close the case" and "contain the situation".

Hajar said she is not sure who is the father of her child but she said that she thinks her stepmother's brother is the primary suspect. On the other hand, Allala said that all of her sister's abusers are all married. Chebbi asserted that "at least, he can recognize his child give  him his name"
Chebbi then told Hajar to ask for her father's forgiveness and "admit that you are at fault."

The TV host's remarks enraged criticisms from the social media users as they interpreted it that Chebbi is suggesting marriage as a solution and it was Hajar's fault.

As social media users were disturbed by the remarks, a Facebook page named "'Marry your rapist' he says. 'We will see you  in court' we reply" emerged and was joined by thousands of users. The page released pictures from the show's studio with text saying  "Mr. Ala: The punishment for rape is imprisonment, not marriage."

Chebbi expressed his defense in Mosaique Radio FM. He claimed that his remarks were taken out of context. He said that he said marriage is the solution to the problem because there is a lack of evidence that Hajar was really raped. He also said that he agrees that Hajar's abusers must be punished but it was Hajar's fault in remaining silent over the incident.

"This is the case of many Tunisian girls who have been raped and did not say anything. Silence is the core of this case" he said.

Nevertheless, the media regulators of Tunisia sided with Chabbi's critics, suspending the host and his program for three months.
