The Philippines knowingly has two seasons only, one that is hot and one that brings rain for a long time.

During these times, mosquitoes thrive in the abandoned water puddles and makes people scared of having the diseases they bring.

However, one vitamin makes a person “unappealing” to mosquitoes, thus making them stay away.

Vitamin B1 has the potential to make mosquitoes stay away from you because it makes a person’s smell more "yeasty”, making them stay away.

A study back in the 1960s indicated that taking vitamin B1 (thiamine) may be effective in discouraging mosquitoes from biting.

However, studies since then have been inconclusive. The theory is, taking more vitamin B1 than your body requires causes the excess to be excreted through your urine, skin, and sweat.

Vitamin B1 produces a skin odor that female mosquitoes seem to find offensive.

It is also a good idea to stay away from chemically-produced insect repellents, especially for children, because these chemicals get absorbed by the body and has the risk of subtle changes in the nervous system.

In case thiamine doesn’t work for you, try this recipe for a natural mosquito repellent to avoid chemical ones. The ingredients are: tea tree oil, lavender oil, witch hazel, and boiled water.

Fill an 8 oz. spray bottle halfway with boiled water, and then add ½ tsp. of witch hazel, 15 drops of tea tree oil and 15 drops of lavender oil.

These tips will help in avoiding all those annoying insect bites.
