When he was given chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2017, supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte were applauding back to the critics as he was trusted to lead the decades-old association.
A netizen named Aristotel Casanova even dropped the truth that the association would not look at the words being thrown by President Duterte but at his qualifications to lead.
In the Facebook page of Unofficial: Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa Solid Supporters, the post says: He cursed the Pope and he got elected as president. He called the US ambassador 'gay' and he got $32 million in military aid. He hypothetically cursed Obama and he got the ASEAN chairmanship."
The post already gathered seven thousand reactions and more than 1.8 thousand shares, with most of the comments supporting what Casanova said.
Unknown to many, the chairmanship of ASEAN is a rotational pattern to all members of the association. The last time the country holded chairmanship was back in January 2007 under former president and now Pampanga congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
With Duterte as the chair, he unveiled the theme of the summit called Partnering for Change, Engaging the World which is alligned with his advocacy for change.
The 2017 ASEAN Summit would held in Manila on August 2017.
