Scars tend to be painful reminders of a past that you’d love to erase. Scars from domestic abuse add insult to injury by functioning as a constant reminder of shame, humiliation and excruciating pain- a stigma that survivors have to bear throughout their lives. But what if there was a way out?

A way to transform the symbols of victimisation to liberation and empowerment? What if you could look at your scars and instead of reminding yourself of the needless abuse you suffered, take it as a cue to let go of the past and rebuild your life anew?

Well Brazilian artist Flavia Carvalho has been doing just that for two years and has helped several other domestic abuse survivors do the same, by transforming the grotesque scars into gorgeous art. Her project “A Pele da Flor” (The Skin of the Flower) is about empowering women by helping them cover their scars from bullets wounds, rape attacks and surgeries and turning them into beautiful tattoos. And best of all, she does them free of cost.

Here are some examples:

A tattoo covering a bullet wound

And this is the tattoo that started it all: It was done for a client who wanted to hide an ugly scar on her abdomen.
