Opened in May 1989, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is one of four theme parks built at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. Originally intended to be a small amusement park with a few basic attractions, the park became more popular than it was expected. Therefore, it was soon expanded into what is now one of the most famous and visited theme parks in the United States (and even the world). When the park opened in 1989, it was named Disney-MGM Studios as Disney and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had signed a licensing contract that had given Disney worldwide rights to use the MGM name and logo for the park.

Standing 163 feet (50 meters) tall, the Earfell Tower was the first iconic structure of the park. In September 2001, the Sorcerer´s Hat with a height of 122 feet (37 meters) replaced the Tower as the new symbol for the park.

Originally, the Hat was going to be built outside the park, with two Ferris wheels as ears and twice as high as it was actually constructed. But not even this centerpiece lasted long – the Sorcerer´s Hat was removed in February 2015 and it has not been decided what – if anything – will replace it.

Similarly to other Walt Disney World parks, the Hollywood Studios also feature many “hidden Mickeys” but if you take a careful look at the entrance plaza outside the ticket booths, you will find a “hidden Pluto”. It is even visible on the park map.

The most famous “hidden Mickey” was to be found at the plaza of the end of the Hollywood Boulevard. Once clearly recognizable on aerial photos, the picture has been gradually distorted by new constructions and other changes to the park.

The construction of Disney´s Hollywood Studios took three years and it cost more than 500 million dollars. Occupying a total area of 135 acres (55 ha), it is now the third largest of the four Walt Disney World theme parks.

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, a live amusement show, is the most dangerous attraction of the park. A number of incidents involving a death of the show´s performer have occurred here since its premiere in 1989.

In 1995, the Earfell Tower had blue goggles in honor of Orlando Magic player Horace Grant. The Magic made it to the final that year but they lost to Houston 0:4 in the final series.

While the Studios may not have tunnels underneath them like the Magic Kingdom, they provide another great option for cast members to get around: bikes. Since the park is almost round, with little guest access to the edges, the park staff use communal bikes to get around the area.

The only place in Walt Disney World where you can buy a photo of Walt Disney is at Sid Cahuenga's souvenir shop in Disney's Hollywood Studios where they sell for $4.00. Occasionally, the store carries an authentic autograph of Walt that can be purchased for about $3,000.

Muppet Vision 3-D is the only 3-D attraction at the Walt Disney World resort that the 3-D glasses are actually called 3-D glasses. At It's tough to be a Bug they are called “Bug Eyes”, at Honey, I Shrunk the Audience they are called “Safety Goggles”.
