When we look in the mirror, we don’t usually notice the small changes in ourselves that occur daily. That is probably why it is quite satisfying to look back on our old photos, where the passage of time is a little bit more pronounced.

For almost 8 years now, David Espinosa has been documenting his life in a series of daily selfies, and recently he decided to combine them, resulting in a 4-minute timelapse video.

David Espinosa, a student of Computer Science, started taking daily selfies at the age of 14. He began his project out of sheer curiosity to see how his face would change over time.

Now a 22-year-old man from Texas, David says he was inspired by photographer Noah Kalina to begin this project that he firmly believes will be a life-long one. “I plan on doing this until I die, so subscribe to my channel to see me age!”

Back in 2006, photographer Noah Kalina took the Internet by storm after he uploaded a video on Youtube titled “everyday”. It was this video featuring a time-lapse of 6 years worth of daily selfies that gave a push to many people around the world to start capturing their own faces daily, including David.

Recently, David decided it was high time to compile over 1800 of his pictures into his own timelapse video. 70 hours of editing turned into a 4-minute video showing David’s transition from a 14-year-old boy to a 21-year-old man.

David says that most of those hours were spent ensuring that each and every photo of his face was perfectly aligned for a smooth transition effect. He used his phone and computer programs such as Paint.net and Sony Vegas Pro to complete the timelapse project. He also revealed that
the first 5 years of his daily selfies were documented using Nintendo DSi until he upgraded to iPhone 5 and then iPhone 6S.

His Youtube video (that has been viewed almost 100k times in just one week) received a lot of positive comments as well as questions. More frequently, people asked why he didn’t smile in most of his pictures, to which David answered: “It was easier to keep a consistent face without smiling”. Yet, we can’t help but notice an occasional smile creeping on his face more towards the end of the video.

People on Reddit also received the video in a positive light. Some of the Reddit users expressed admiration for David’s commitment saying that they couldn’t even commit to flossing two days in a row.

Others, having watched the video until the very end, felt like they have aged together with David. Someone even commented that they didn’t notice changes up until the very last frame showing David in years 2010 and 2018 side by side.

David concludes by saying that he soon will be sixty years old… He doesn’t know if he will think of the world as a cold place or if he will have a lot of children to warm him up. We certainly wish him a wonderful life filled with warmth… and more smiling!
