Many experiences in one’s life can change one’s perspective; some leave a stronger impact than others, whilst some can completely change the path of one’s life. What we do in response to these events is what truly defines us, makes us who we are, and defines a person’s courage and bravery. Stephen King’s 1996 novel, The Green Mile was adapted into a movie under the visionary direction of Frank Darabont, and portray’s the importance of one’s character.

Man with a special gift

The movie follows the lives of guards at death row, whose lives have been affected by one of their prisoners, who serves a sentence due to accusations of child murder and rape. The prisoner has a mysterious gift which catches the attention of the prison guards. The story set in the 1930s follows the tale of Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) and Brutus ‘Brutal’ Howell (David Morse), whose lives are turned around when they receive John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) as a prisoner on death row. John is a tall muscular black man and at first, confrontation is despised by the guards. As the story evolves and Paul spends more time watching over John he starts to see that John is actually a kind-hearted person with a rather special gift. The story is shown in flashbacks of Paul’s life, the events that took place during the great depression era, and the supernatural events he witnessed. His prisoner John Coffey helps him relieve his bladder infection and helps resurrect a fellow prisoner’s dead pet. He also helps cure the chief warden’s wife of her brain tumour using his supernatural powers.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

The movie is both emotional and captivating, as it is told through the memory of Paul, as he relives the time he spent as a death row officer is truly sensational. The storyline is flawless and the cast portrays the characters with absolute perfection. The emotional ending touches the heart of the audience. The movie was highly rated by critics with some critics saying; ‘’Though the Green Mile is long, critics say it’s an absorbing, emotionally powerful experience.” The movie carries a powerful message for the viewers to not judge anyone without getting to know them. It also teaches them to look for the light in the dark, for those moments can change your life forever.

The movie is one to watch for everyone looking to be amazed by an incredible story.
