The emir of Qatar extended his generosity not only to the Philippine delegation led by President Rodrigo Duterte but to the members of the media as well as he shouldered all the expenses for the hotel accommodations of the members of the press during their 2-day state visit in Qatar.

Both reports from ABS-CBN and Inquirer confirmed this news as they claimed Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, emir of Qatar, paid the hotel fees of 39 media members when they stayed in the five-star Hilton Hotel in Doha. According to ABS-CBN’s Ron Gagalac, each person’s accommodation amounted to $260 or Php12, 866 per night. He reported that a Malacanang staff informed them that it was the state’s protocol every time a foreign leader would visit the rich gulf country.

On the other hand, Inquirer’s Allan Nawal confirmed that ‘it’s the Emir who can decide if you pay or not. They insisted paying their own bills but the hotel staff turned down their payment and explained that they were not allowed to accept it.

Meanwhile, online media source Kicker Daily reported that Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, has a 2014 net worth of $2-billion, making him one of the richest sheiks in the world. He is also considered as one of the youngest reigning monarchs. His business includes investments in British established companies such as Harrods, Barclays and Sainsbury’s.
