Indonesia strongly upholds its stance against illegal fishing as it destroyed 81 foreign ships who have been caught fishing illegally in their territorial waters over the weekend.

The ships included in the blow off were ones from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and even from the Philippines.

The ships were reported to have been destroyed in 12 locations around the archipelago.

It was in 2014 when Indonesia started its tough campaign against illegal fishing around their territory. Since Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo assumed office, 317 foreign vessels have been destroyed by the government including the 81.

Susi Pudjiastuti, the minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, witnessed the blow off and claimed that Indonesia is just strongly enforcing its sovereignty and campaign against illegal fishing.

“We hope Sino (the name of one of the ships) is the symbol of our victory against poaching after years of defeat, especially in eastern Indonesia,” Pudjiastuti said, questing from News.com.au.

The minister has ordered a fishing moratorium for foreign vessels as soon as she took office.
