If you can still recall your childhood, you might be able to remember losing a few of your baby teeth. The often painful process is hard to forget. Your parents probably told you to place your baby teeth under your pillow or in a container for the tooth fairy when she comes to visit. True enough, once you wake up, the tooth will be gone, replaced with money.

Of course, now that you're all grown up, you probably already know that the tooth fairy wasn’t responsible for replacing your baby teeth with money. It turns out, your parents did that all along.

If you are a parent, the cycle will continue and you will be the one responsible for giving your child some spare change in exchange for their baby teeth.

Most parents just throw the baby teeth away because that seems to be the most logical thing to do. After all, what purpose do they have? The body discarded it so you might as well do that, too.

However, dentists recently discovered that you shouldn’t throw your children’s baby teeth away.

Songtao Shi, a doctor from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recently discovered that baby teeth contain at least two dozen stem cells that can be used to treat diseases.

Instead of looking for a compatible donor for your child’s operation in the event of an accident or an illness, you can just use the baby teeth filled with life-saving stem cells.

According to experts, the stem cells in the baby teeth could be used for the treatment of type 1 diabetes, or to cure ailments that affect organs such as the heart, brain, and pancreas.

Doctors warn parents that if they plan on keeping their children’s baby teeth in order to make use of the stem cells, they should let a professional dentist pull the tooth out and store it in places such as the Tooth Bank and Bioden. You could also ask your dentist how to properly store your children’s baby teeth for future use.

Some doctors place the baby teeth in a liquid nitrogen cryopreservation vault to prevent the stem cells from dying.
