Back in the late ‘80s to the ‘90s, Japan's economy was in crisis, together with other Asian economies.
This, in turn, resulted in the country facing the “Lost Decade,” where the Japanese asset price bubble collapsed within the economy.
People were having a hard time looking for jobs and parents were struggling to send their children to school with the earnings that they have.
However, one schoolgirl managed to enter high school and that was none other than Junko Furuta, who would tragically become one of Japan’s worst case rape and murder victim.
Her case has shattered the otherwise quiet nation that was then struggling with their economy.
According to reports, Junko was a 17-year-old high school who was kidnapped, tortured, raped, and then murdered in the late 1980s.
Her murder was called the “concrete-encased high school murder case” because she was found inside a concrete drum filled with 208 liters.
It was said that on November 25, 1988, four boys kidnapped Junko from the Misato, Saitama Prefecture. They held her captive for a total of forty-four days in one of the boy’s house in Ayase district of Adachi, Tokyo.
Junko was a student of the Yashio-Minami High School and was kidnapped after she left her school. The boys forced her to call her parents and informed them that she would be “staying at a friend’s house.”
When Junko did that, she was subjected to extreme torture for forty-four days, where the boys took turn repeatedly raping, beating, and torturing her with absolutely no mercy.
After which, her body was disposed of in a 208-liter oil drum that was filled with pure concrete. This was later found in a tract of reclaimed land in Koto, Tokyo.
The boys who were responsible for the crime were arrested by the authorities and tried on as adults but because they were below legal age when the crime was committed, their identities were not disclosed by the court.
