It is well-known that Filipinos prefer going abroad to work because the pay is higher and the opportunities are better.
This is especially true for medicine graduates, who usually apply for work in different countries instead of working in local hospitals. However, a certain doctor in Italy is going against the grain.
ABS-CBN News reported that Jeffrey Padul, a 27-year-old doctor specializing in physical and rehabilitative medicine, stated that he wanted to help his fellow Filipinos in Italy.
He said: “I think the best way I can help the Philippines, my home country, is to do my best to help the Filipino communities here in Italy. I know that I can be very helpful for my community.”
“I know a lot of Filipinos that are attending universities in Italy in medicine, in law, economics, in math, physics. As a Filipino, I’m very proud of them. We are the next generation of Filipinos.”
“We are not the generation of domestic helpers. We raise a new flag of Philippines here in Italy,” he continued.
Padul was born in Messina, South Italy, where he also grew up. According to ABS-CBN, he is currently the only Filipino doctor in North Italy. He stated that he initially wanted to be an engineer, but took up medicine when one of his family members had to get hospitalized.
He mentioned: “My parents have been the major motivation of my studies because they showed me since I was a little boy, you know, life is difficult. They made a lot of sacrifices for me.”
