We usually think that escalators are harmless equipment. But did you know that most of the accidents that occur inside malls involve these seemingly-innocent walkways?
In fact, last March 6, Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that a woman’s calf got terribly wounded while riding an escalator in a shopping complex.
The marketing communications assistant manager of the mall revealed, “From the photos, you can see that a metal piece on the side of the escalator came unhinged and was bent to the middle.”
“We are still unsure how this had happened as it would usually take some form of abuse for the metal to come off like that,” he continued.
The victim was a 20-year-old woman, who was immediately rushed to the hospital following the incident. The mall’s management has decided to shoulder her medical expenses.
In 2014, a three-year-old boy lost his life when he sustained injuries after riding an escalator in a mall in Binondo. Philippine Star reported that he suffered a cracked skull and broken arms.
The boy’s hand apparently got stuck in the escalator while his mother was busy looking at a stack of shoes nearby. She let go of the boy’s hand and he turned his attention towards the escalator, where he got dragged to the first floor.
In a similar incident, Peanut Daily reported that another kid got involved in an escalator accident. The footage was captured by netizen Grace Mae Dulay, who uploaded it on Facebook.
According to the report, the accident happened in SM San Lazaro in Tayuman, Manila. The footage garnered many comments such as:
