Mark Zuckerberg, tech mogul and Facebook creator, has continuously made great strides into creating ingenuities that is aimed towards making the world a better place.
Just this Thursday, February 9, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan shelled out a $3 billion investment for the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. Part of it is an independent non-profit Biohub worth $50 million that is set to be given for the long-term research of 47 scientists, technologists, engineers working at the University of California – San Francisco, Stanford, and University of California – Berkley.
Each will be given $1.5 million to carry out the necessary experiments for the next five years. The goal of the the initiative is "to cure, prevent or manage all disease during our children's lifetime".
“Our three university partners provide the very backbone of Biohub’s work. Investigators come from these outstanding research institutions, and their faculty will be an integral part of our day-to-day operations here at Biohub,” the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub said in a release.
The multi-million medical research organization also assured everyone that the huge investment will not be misused or unexploited and be given to the most qualified and competent researchers.
“We are conducting research that helps solve big health problems. We find and support the best and brightest biologists, scientists, engineers and technologists,” the Biohub said as part of the media release.
As part of the CZI initiative, there are two major strands specifically being explored by the CZ Biohub: the Infectious Disease Initiative, which aims to go to war with deadly diseases and pandemics like the Zika and Ebola outbreaks, and the Cell Atlas, an exploration that will attempt to generate a comprehensive biological map of human cells in major organs to better understand diseases and eventually create cures for their common sickness.
