Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are one of the major key players of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte in his mission to create a better version of the Philippines.
Pres. Duterte have always been supported by Filipinos abroad even before he was inaugurated as country’s highest leader. During the time when Pres. Duterte was still hesitant to run as president, OFWs did not stop trying to convince Duterte, then Davao City mayor. OFWs went to their social media platforms to call on Duterte to file his presidential candidacy. Facebook groups and Facebook forums were created in line with the desire of the OFW's to see duterte become the next President. Just as when other Duterte supporters has stopped campaigning for him when he said that he will not run, the OFWs remained loyal to him.
With more than 100 days since the dream of these OFWs came true, the overwhelming support and love of Filipinos abroad still can be felt. While many critics were there to criticize the President, OFWs are always there as well to fight beside him. OFW’ are always present with Duterte’s vision of turning Philippines into a better nation.
Since Filipinos abroad are exposed to different cultures and norms, they have the freedom to compare Philippines to other countries. Because of this, it can be seen that they trust Duterte so much that what they see in other countries can also be seen in the Philippines through Duterte’s administration. They also might have been used to the incompetence of the previous government and so they believe in Duterte’s campaign for change. Moreover, living far away from their love ones makes them worry about them so much. They trust Digong to take care of them while they are away.
The OFWs’ act of supporting Duterte originated from their desire and thirst for a genuine change. A type of change only Digong can give.
Although the population of these OFWs are significantly small compared to the 16M people who elected the President, the undying support and trust of these Filipinos abroad are important components of what made Duterte run the country. Moreover, OFWs taught many people to speak out so their voices can be heard. And because of this, they helped a genuine leader be in the position to lead the Philippines.
Until now, OFWs remain to be the most active, the most vocal and the most diligent when it comes to supporting President Duterte. They are truly one with their words when they said that they will fight for and with Digong until the end.
