Some people tend to filter their Facebook newsfeed of posts showing cheesy pictures of couples. While there is nothing wrong with publicly declaring love for one another, too much bragging of romantic relationship with a significant other could be a sign of being insecure.

A study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin proved this claim. According to them, if a person is too “anxious” he or she is more likely to fill his or her timeline of posts about them and their lovers. 

The study conducted by Lydia Emery from Northwestern University surveyed 108 people who are tagged as “in a relationship” on Facebook. Their response led to the conclusion that when a person feels romantically insecure, he or she is more likely to share posts, statuses or photos with their lovers.

The study also said that this act contributes to the way they want people to perceive their relationship. 

“When people felt more insecure about their partner’s feelings, they tended to make their relationship visible,” the study said.

Another study conducted by Aalto University suggested that while people are trying to be “real” online, they add fake components to “meet social expectations and maintain their image”.

In addition, Albright College’s study showed that people use Facebook to monitor the situation of their relationship and how it is actually going. They try to “reassure themselves” that everything is going great in the relationship based on their partner’s activity on Facebook. They stated that “individuals high in Relationship Contingent Self-Esteem (RCSE)–an unhealthy form of self-esteem that depends on how well your relationship is going–are also more likely to post affectionate content.”  

Meanwhile, Assistant professor of psychology Gwendolyn Seidman, Ph.D. added that people high in RCSE tend to use Facebook to show everybody that they are okay and they themselves are okay.
