President Rodrigo Duterte apologized to the Jewish community for his offensive remarks that drew parallel between his war against drugs and ruthless dictator Adolf Hitler's genocide of Jews during the Holocaust last Sunday at Negros Occidental.

He said there was no intention to disparage and disrespect the memory of slain Jews and other people who suffered under the Nazi regime.

“There was never an intention on my part to derogate the memory of 6 million Jews murdered by the Germans. I apologize profoundly and deeply to the Jewish community” Duterte said.

When he had his official visit in Vietnam, Duterte said he would be “happy to slaughter” three million drug addicts in the Philippines by himself just like how Hitler had murdered millions of Jews before and during the Second World War.

“If Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have …,” Duterte told reporters in Davao City, before pausing and pointing to himself.

The President’s remarks drew criticisms from the Jewish community, United Nations, German and Israeli governments, the Pentagon, and international rights groups.

His supporters said his critics must know the whole context before writing about it but has also asked the president to control his statements so that the media would not sensationalize him
