During the launch of a premium bus service in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last Tuesday, Transportation Sec. Art Tugade made a statement that the worsening situation of Metro Manila traffic is all in the mind of the people, adding that they only use traffic as an excuse for their habit of being tardy.

“Even when there (was) no traffic, (people say) there was,” he scoffed.

“A state of mind adds to the problem of traffic,” he added. “Let’s stop blaming traffic. If you’re late, that’s that.”

Netizens reacted to this remark saying that most of them are not that crazy to just create traffic on their heads. Though the mind is powerful, they said that it is not enough to produce traffic on its own. They also shared that some already accepted traffic as a norm when it shouldn’t be. Getting stuck in heavy traffic jams is not a joke and netizens are calling for real action instead of making “misdirection techniques”.

Prior to the anger brewing in social media, Sec. Tugade immediately clarified his statement saying that he was misunderstood. Transportation Assistant Secretary for Communications Cherie Mercado-Santos ran to Tugade’s aide by clearing his controversial remark.

“What the Secretary is asking, is a change of psyche, a platform of cooperation for citizens to be part of the solution, for Filipinos to simply be truthful,” she pointed out.

We can recall that Tugade already asked the Congress to grant emergency powers to the President for the resolution of the traffic problems in the metro. The Secretary admits that emergency powers will not yet solve everything in two to three years’ time but he asks that Filipinos’ should not lose hope.
