“If Germany had Hitler, the Philippines has me.”
This is what President Rodrigo Duterte said in a press conference in Davao, who just got back in the country after his short visit to Vietnam’s capital, Ha Noi.
The President said that he would be “happy to slaughter” 3 million addicts and criminals, if that is what it would take to eradicate crime in the country.
"Hitler massacred three million Jews ... there's three million drug addicts. There are. I'd be happy to slaughter them," Duterte said early on Friday.
During the presidential campaign last May 2016, one of Duterte’s pitch to the Filipino people was that he would get rid of drugs and crime in a span of 6 months.
Now that he is 3 months in, his administration has killed over 3,000 criminals; all alleged drug dealers and addicts.
Duterte has publicly encouraged civilians to kill addicts and said he will not prosecute police for extrajudicial executions.
“You know my victims. I would like (them) to be all criminals to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition,” he said during the press conference early on Friday.
Among Duterte's most recent critics were U.S. Senators Patrick Leahy and Benjamin Cardin, who expressed concern over Duterte's handling of the war on drugs.
"If President Duterte is serious about improving conditions in the Philippines, he should be focusing on improving services for Filipinos, not casting them aside;
holding law enforcement accountable, not giving them a blanket license to kill suspects; and strengthening the judiciary, not undercutting it," Leahy said.
Duterte replied to them by telling them to stop being hypocrites and stop pretending to be the “moral conscience of this world”.
