In an attempt to show the LGBT community from all over the country that they have a voice, Ateneo de Davao University has officially announced their first all-gender rest rooms in their campus.
This is a wish granted by the mandate of ADDU President Father Joel Tabora, SJ, after a series of dialogues with the LGBT community in the campus in Davao under Memorandum 2016 – 96, issued last Wednesday, on the 7th of September.
“ADDU is required to increase understanding and respect for the human needs and sensitivities of all. This would include administrators, teachers, students and staff on all levels,” Tabora stated in the memo.
He also added that the university is “committed to cultural transformation in favor of a society that is more deeply accepting of diversity, including gender diversity, based on a fundamental recognition of the dignity of all.”
This is not only in accordance of their submission to Davao City’s special legislation that prohibits the discrimination against the LGBT community, but is also a showcase of ADDU being “positively committed to cultural sensitivity,
intercultural dialogue and cultural transformation in favor of a society that is more accepting of diversity, including gender diversity, based on a fundamental recognition of the dignity of all,” Tabora explained.
Although this move is bound to raise some eyebrows with the conservative sector of the school,
Center of Psychological Extension and Research Services, assistant director for external affairs
and lead antidiscrimination ordinance advocate Hadji Balajadia said that this is a success and that this will lead to more discourses that is leaning toward a more “a more inclusive picture of a university,” Balajadia said.
