The increased number in deaths related to illegal drugs sparked many allegations of extrajudicial killings against the government. The deaths have already tolled to 7,000, enough to compel some senators to conduct a senate hearing regarding the issue. It is led by an Adhoc committee chaired by no other than Duterte’s long-time enemy, Senator Leila De Lima.

However, recently, the hearing trended on social media sites as a witness who claims to be part of the Davao Death Squad was presented. Edgar Matobato claims that the DDS squad assassinates and performs extrajudicial killings for Duterte back when he was Mayor of Davao. But many senators questioned the credibility of the witness. Many also pointed out that the hearing went out of the way as it should be about the present war on drugs not the Davao killings which were never proven.

This was the plea of PNP Chief Ronald Bato Dela Rosa. He shared in an interview: ““Nagulat ako bakit umabot doon sa DDS. Akala ko war on drugs. Akala ko extrajudicial killings at war on drugs. E,‘yung mga pinagsasabi n’ya ilang years na ‘yun na noon pa,”

“The timing and his (Matobato) presence diyan sa hearing na ‘yan is questionable na in the first place. Akala ko war on drugs ang pinag-uusapan, ‘yung extrajudicial killing in relation to the war on drugs. E, bakit ‘yung kay Matobato na matagal na?” he added.

Matobato claims that President Duterte made him and his colleagues kill different personalities and criminals in which one of these was an ambush attempt on De Lima back when he was still chair of Commission on Human Rights.
Meanwhile, Duterte is yet to react on the allegations against him.
