HIV is known for being a sexually transmitted disease, however aside from that it may also be transmitted through needle sharing and blood transfusion. This had been given facts released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Surprisingly though, what's not on the list is through sharing of nail equipments which have apparently been a cause according to an experience of a Brazilian woman last year. She was about to donate blood when to her surprise, she tested positive for HIV. She denied that she caught the infection through either intercourse or needle sharing.
When her mother tested negative, they recalled an experience that may have caused the infection. She once shared a manicure equipment with her cousin who worked at a salon, during the time of contact her cousin still was not aware of the infection until some time later. When samples from her and her cousin had been analyzed, they had proved that the viral genetic material was related.
According to the authors of the study on the virus, "HIV is not transmitted by casual contact, such as sharing eating utensils, or drinking from the same water glass. This transmission of HIV by shared manicure equipment is a very rare event that should serve not to make people fear HIV or contact with HIV-infected people."
