Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III assures stranded Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in
Saudi Arabia last Wednesday as King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud offers assistance.
According to Bello, the Ministry of Labor of the King is in the midst of process of extending
assistance for the welfare of the OFWs. He said that the King's order specified relinquishing
penalties concerning the expiration of work visas, airfare for the return of the OFWs to the
country, food, re-employment and lawful assistance.
"We were also informed that the Ministry of Labor will allow the transfer of workers to other
companies should they wish to continue working in KSA. The workers may look for new
employers, and the good thing is the Ministry of Labor will mobilize the Mega Manpower
Companies to offer jobs to workers."
"We immensely express our gratitude to King Salman for his concern to our OFWs," the
labor secretary said.
Due to the recession of oil prices in Saudi Arabia, 9,000 to 11,000 Filipino workers lost thier
jobs and are now stranded in the said country.
"This is a welcome development and, indeed, a big help in our ongoing efforts to secure
the welfare of our OFWs."
